European Accessibility Act

Accessibility audits for online shop checkouts

Since 28 June 2025, online shops selling to consumers in the EU have to meet the accessibility requirements of the European Accessibility Act. We test the path your customers take to pay you, by keyboard and screen reader, and give your developers the exact fixes.

Send us your shop URL. You get the most serious issues on your homepage and one product page, by email, within three working days.

Does the law apply to your shop?

The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) covers e-commerce services offered to consumers in the EU. Each member state enforces it through its own authority and sets its own penalties.

Who is covered
Businesses selling products or services online to consumers in any EU country, wherever the business itself is based.
Who is exempt
Microenterprises providing services: fewer than 10 employees and annual turnover or balance sheet of no more than €2 million.
Which standard
The harmonised standard EN 301 549, which for websites means WCAG 2.1 level AA. That is the standard we audit against.

This is general information, not legal advice. If you are unsure whether the exemption applies to you, ask a lawyer.

What we test, and what we do not

Automated scanners find only part of the problems that WCAG covers. Most checkout failures show up when a person actually tries to buy something without a mouse, so that is how we test.

Included in every audit

  • Keyboard-only purchase from product page to the payment step
  • Visible focus and a logical focus order, including in pop-ups and drawers
  • Form labels, required fields and error messages
  • Names, roles and states of buttons, links and custom controls
  • Colour contrast of text and controls
  • Zoom to 200% and reflow at 400% without loss of content
  • Screen reader pass with NVDA and Chrome on Windows
  • Automated scan of each template as a baseline

Not included

  • Native iOS and Android apps
  • Mobile screen readers (VoiceOver, TalkBack)
  • Changes to your code: we write the fixes, your developers apply them
  • Testing sessions with users who have disabilities
  • Legal certification or a guarantee of compliance

Payment pages hosted by your payment provider are checked and reported, but only the provider can change them.

What the report contains

Each issue is written so a developer can fix it without a meeting.

Where and why

The page, the element, the WCAG success criterion it fails and which customers it blocks.

The fix

The corrected markup or code pattern for your platform, ordered by how badly each issue blocks a purchase.

Method

The tools, browser and screen reader versions used, and a list of every check that was not performed.

Why we fix code instead of selling a widget

Overlay widgets add a toolbar on top of a site and leave the underlying code unchanged. A missing form label is still missing after the widget loads, so the screen reader still has nothing to announce. We find the issue in your templates and give you the corrected code.

Fixed prices

Prices in euros, excluding VAT where applicable. Payment by card through Stripe once we have agreed the scope.

How it works

  1. Send your shop URL. We reply with the templates in scope and a fixed price.
  2. Pay through Stripe. Testing starts on the next working day.
  3. We test. On your live shop, without placing orders or entering real customer data.
  4. You receive the report. As a PDF, plus a spreadsheet of issues your developers can import into their tracker.

Who runs ClearCheckout

ClearCheckout is operated by Alexandru Filip in Brussels. Testing and report writing are AI-assisted. Every report documents the method used and every check performed, so your team can verify each finding on its own.
